Gas Properties Calculator
Build the gas PVT engine an appraisal team needs before the lab report arrives: Sutton pseudo-criticals, two Z-factor correlations solved with Fsolve, density, Bg and viscosity, then a 3D Z-factor application.
The brief
You are the junior production engineer, gas asset team
Your team is appraising a new gas discovery. The laboratory PVT report is weeks away, but the reservoir engineers need gas properties now to size facilities and run the first material balance.
Your lead asks you to build a calculator from the gas gravity alone: the Z-factor, density, formation volume factor and viscosity at any pressure and temperature, with two independent Z-factor correlations so the team can see how much the choice matters.
By the end you will have the engine behind a web application that draws the Z-factor surface in 3D, and every number in it will come from code you wrote.
- Gas specific gravity
- 0.65 (air = 1)
- Reservoir pressure
- 2,000 psia
- Reservoir temperature
- 180 °F
- Operating envelope
- 100 – 8,000 psia, 60 – 300 °F
What you will be able to do
- Estimate pseudo-critical properties of a natural gas from its gravity
- Solve an implicit Z-factor equation with Reineur Solver's Fsolve
- Compute gas density, formation volume factor and viscosity
- Compare two industry correlations and judge the difference
- Produce the pressure–temperature grid a visual application draws
